The Guyana experience
The Guyana Experience August 2025
Hi Friends, I want to share with you about our wonderful adventures in Guyana. It was such a great experience, but hard to put into words. God has the heart for all people, and when we follow Him, things aren’t always easy, but they are rewarding. He will push us beyond our comfort zone to show us that He is the Lord. He will give us joy in our journey even in our times of stretching.
We had a small team of 4, Samantha and Pierre (who grew up in Guyana), and David and I. The 4 of us stayed in a Medical Missionary place called “Project Dawn.” We were able to see the mission teams at work helping the people with medical needs, training doctors, teaching and feeding kids that were learning to read. The teams were taking time out of their normal lives to come help these kids and adults. It was their way of “Giving Back” as they said. From their example, I learned to do mission work with excellence and compassion!
The goal for the 4 of us was to help a local church in Georgetown called Kingston Methodist Church. They were getting ready to celebrate their 196th anniversary. The building was not that old, but it was in need of a lot of repairs. We donated 4 fans since they didn’t have air conditioning. We also donated sand for them to put outside to cover the erosion of the walls.
We also put on an all day Vacation Bible School. We shared with the kids about having a heart for God like David did. They loved doing the crafts. We also taught them about David and Goliath and had frisbees as the shield of faith and nerf balls to throw at Goliath (which was David). Most of them weren't familiar with a frisbee so we had time outside teaching them how to throw it. That was great fun and the kids learned a new skill. We gave them lunch and I had the honor to tell them about the love of Jesus that can clean our sin. I had great examples and the kids got real quiet which made me feel so glad. I was able to pray the prayer of salvation with them as a group and I know that God did a mighty work. He has a special plan for these kids. We had more crafts and free time where the older ones played soccer and the younger ones did more crafts. At the end of the day, we gave every child a back pack that matched their age and size. There were markers, pencils, and a notebook inside each back pack. We had collected some beautiful books and they were super excited to get the books too. It was a wonderful day!
There was another team from Global Missions in Atlanta that came down and we also served with them and learned from them. We went to a lady’s prison and gave our testimonies. We also went to a foster care home and shared a meal and gave them clothes and goodie bags. We went to 2 different churches and gave out clothes, socks, book bags, snacks and candy (they love candy). At the nursing home, we sang and gave them socks. We shared the love of Jesus with everyone and talked about the importance of family and the love chapter 13 in 1st Corinthians.
In our free time, Samantha and Pierre shared with us their heart for the country. We learned about the variety of cultures, the government, their animals, the food, the housing, the market, the seawall, and the waterfall. Most importantly, they introduced us to their family and friends who cooked for us everywhere we went. It didn’t matter how poor the people were, they showed us joy and genuine care. I will never forget their hospitality and the love they shared for each other and with us.
I want to thank everyone who prayed for us and those who made a financial contribution to our service project! I really knew the prayer support was real. God did an amazing work with us and through us. We had a very rich experience in Guyana and I thank God for this opportunity!
Psalm 28:7 says
The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.
