"I'm Good"
Oftentimes when we ask someone if they want help or if they need anything, they say, “I’m good”. This is such an interesting phrase, “I’m Good”, and it actually kind of drives me crazy as an interpreter. I want to interpret.. “Me good”. But does it mean that I'm a good person? Not really. Sometimes it means, “No, I don't want your help…”; sometimes it means, “Don't bother me…”; Sometimes the person is shy when they say it because they are afraid to receive help. Something funny happened the other day. I saw a man that was deaf and I had the opportunity to interpret for him. I asked him if he minded if I interpreted for him…I'm thinking of this phrase “I'm good, or no thank you”, but he said, “OK”. That was so refreshing. It almost caught me off guard by a simple ok…A simple answer to a question.
Another interpretation of “I'm Good” is I’m satisfied right where I am without need of alteration. I can support that interpretation, “Me thumbs up”. How often are we satisfied with the way things are? When I think of being satisfied, I think of contentment. When we are living in the center of God’s will, He will satisfy us. It doesn’t mean we will get there on our own without asking for help. Sometimes we need to admit that we need help from others and from God and that’s ok. So next time someone says, “Can I help you?” What do you think you will say? Remember, being content is a process.
